What is Dhul Hijjah?
Dhul Hijjah is the final month in the Islamic calendar, the month in which Muslims all over the globe embark on Hajj and offer their Qurbani/Udhiyah sacrifices for the love of Allah (SWT). The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are actually the most sacred days of the whole year, and our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) tells us that “there are no days in which good works are more beloved to Allah than these days” (Bukhari).
What is Qurbani/Udhiyah?
The Prophet Mohammad was once asked: “What is Qurbani (or Udhiyah)?” The Prophet replied: “It is the tradition of your father Ibrahim. For every hair of the Qurbani/Udhiyah (sacrifice) you receive a reward from God (Allah)” (Tirmidhi). According to Islamic tradition, the practice of sacrifice can be traced back to the Prophet Ibrahim who dreamt that God ordered him to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
What are the days of Qurbani/Udhiyah?
The days of Qurbani/Udhiyah are the 10th, 11th and 12th of the month of Dhul Hijjah in the Lunar calendar.
Who should give Qurbani/Udhiyah?
All Muslim adults who are sane are eligible to pay Zakat must make the sacrifice.
What does my donation cover?
Your donation is 1 share of Qurbani/Udhiyah, which equals one sheep/goat or 1/7 of a cow or buffalo. This feeds about 5 to 10 families.
Which animals can be sacrificed?
Qurbani/Udhiyah animals must be a goat, sheep, cattle (cow, ox, water buffalo) or a camel.
Goats: A sustainable option that keeps giving long after Eid al-Adha

Because delivering fresh meat on one occasion sustains these families for only a limited time, we are providing you with an opportunity to help assist them sustainably by providing them with resilient and durable livestock in the form of goats.

Goats can be bred and sold to help families put food on the table, provide critical income during emergencies, and pay for children’s education. By helping families develop a herd, you are helping these families ensure their long-term economic stability and help create stronger communities.

For $190, your gift of one pregnant female goat can help sustain a family beyond qurbani/udhiyah season, and build a brighter, more economically-secure future for tomorrow.

How are Qurbani/Udhiyah animals chosen?
The animals will weigh around 220 lbs and have the minimum number of teeth as set out by Sharia law. The animals will not have any external wounds or injuries, nor will they be physically disabled or have any visible cuts or marks. We will take the utmost care to ensure that our Qurbani/Udhiyah takes place in accordance with Islamic principles, as set out by the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Can a sick or defected animal be offered as Qurbani/Udhiyah?
All animals for Qurbani/Udhiyah must be in good health and free from any problems with their eyes, bones, and limbs. All our Qurbani/Udhiyah animals are well cared for and thoroughly checked to ensure they are suitable.
How is the slaughter performed?
To be accepted as Qurbani/Udhiyah, the animals must be slaughtered in the appropriate Islamic way.
What are the ethical requirements followed by Penny Appeal during the sacrifices?
  • Sharpen the knife prior to putting the animal down for slaughter.
  • Ensure that the correct size knife is used to slaughter the animal swiftly.
  • Feed the animal, give the animal water and sooth the animal, show kindness and mercy to the animal.
  • Ensure the area of slaughter is clean and clear of live animals.
  • Make provision for Blood drainage, fly control and general cleanliness.
  • Lead the animal to its slaughter humanely.
  • Do not perform the slaughter process in front of other live animals.
  • Maintain strict hygiene standards.
What is the method of the sacrifice?

According to Islamic Law, the legal purification of the flesh of animals requires that the following conditions be met:

  • Making of the intention.
  • It is preferable to make the throat of the animal face the Qibla (i.e. mustahab).
  • Using a sharp knife swiftly cut the windpipe, the gullet and the two jugular veins, do not sever the entire head.
  • Recite the name of God (tasmiyah), while slaughtering the animal (Preferably aloud).
  • Skinning of the animal should only commence once the animal stops kicking.
  • Keep meat and offal separate, clean and refrigerate as soon as possible.
Can I choose which animal will be sacrificed for my Qurbani/Udhiyah?
The availability of animals and local preferences determine which animals are slaughtered so it is not possible to specify.
What is the process like for the meat distribution?

We will make sure your sacrifice is carried out in the appropriate Islamic way and at the right time. Rest assured that we only use the healthiest Qurbani/Udhiyah animals (sheep, goat, or cow) and will deliver the fresh meat straight to those who need it the most.

Because delivering fresh meat on one occasion sustains these families for only a limited time, we are providing you with an opportunity to help assist them sustainably by providing them with resilient and durable livestock in the form of goats.

Who receives the Qurbani/Udhiyah meat?
All the fresh, succulent Qurbani/Udhiyah meat benefits local poor and needy families, allowing them to share the celebration of Eid with us. The Qurbani/Udhiyah meat may be handed out so that families can make a hot, nutritious meal for Eid.
How many people are fed with each Qurbani/Udhiyah?
One Qurbani/Udhiyah will provide approximately 57 meals. A Qurbani/Udhiyah is 1/7 of a large cattle or camel, or a whole sheep or goat.
Where is Penny Appeal performing the Qurbani/Udhiyah sacrifices?

We are performing the Qurbanis/Udhiyahs in India and Cameroon, due to need. India has one of the largest populations of people in poverty. Our standard Qurbani/Udhiyah price point is $40. These will be slaughtered in India (1 cow share).

Additional Qurbans are being completed in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine and the United States.

Why should I do my Qurbani/Udhiyah with Penny Appeal USA?
Absolutely! You may give Qurbani/Udhiyah on behalf of someone else, including a deceased Muslim. You can also give Qurbani/Udhiyah in the name of The Prophet (saw) or his family members. However, this must be done in addition to your own Qurbani/Udhiyah.
When is the deadline for giving Qurbani/Udhiyah?
We will stop taking Qurbani/Udhiyah donations after the second day of Eid.
Can I pay for Qurbani/Udhiyah with my Zakat or sadaqah?
No, Qurbani/Udhiyah is a separate obligation.
Should I avoid anything in the 10 days before Eid ul-Adha?
During this time you should not cut your hair or nails or remove parts of the skin.
Will I get a receipt or feedback?
We’ll send you a receipt to confirm your Qurbani/Udhiyah but we are unable to provide notification when individual Qurbanis/Udhiyahs have been completed.
Is this donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Penny Appeal USA is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. To claim a donation as a deduction on your U.S. taxes, please keep your email donation receipt as your official record. We’ll send it to you upon successful completion of your donation.
